I am always entranced and intrigued by designs and patterns in black and white--probably a reflection of many years in black and white photography. I still enjoy those same elements, now with the addition of bright colors which serve as a backdrop for the simple and expressive elements which give us cause to smile. Going to a carnival is a very human-driven need, and allows us to go out in all our joy and finery.

The emergence of spring has to be one of my favorite times of year. Unlike mid/later summer, when the greens become more uniform, in the spring the chartreuse and lime green brilliance stand in stark contrast to the more somber tones of the pines and evergreens. Literally spring bursts out and escapes even the frame of the picture. I crave driving over the mountains and reveling in the new colors which come much earlier and more profusely over there than in the high desert. Like nature, our essence frequently experiences joy which cannot be contained

This is part of the first group of trees pieces that resulted from a trip visiting a dear friend in the Crestone area of Colorado. The trees themselves evolved from graffiti paint dribbles captured from the side of a train tank car. I was totally taken in, certain that forests and trees would be emerging soon in various guises. This one, obviously, references to the poem by Robert Frost.

This piece created itself in the middle of the night in January under the full moon. When I reflected on it later, it seemed to me to represent those times in our lives when we head for the foreboding deep forest of our own fears where we encounter our own shadow. But the ribbon of our intent becomes a path keeping us on track until we reach the other side, arriving safely.

This piece was part of a year-long series which developed a theme of "Pearls" or orbs, if you will. Each piece of the series has a different metaphorical meaning about human values and how we make our way on the "Hero's Journey." This one represents our lives, which at any given time exist in more than one dimension, of which physical reality represents a very small part. We are each pearls in creation, always existing, sometimes manifesting and floating into form and then back into timelessness. Caught on sea foam, created by turbulent flowing water, we are suspended in space.

This piece is constructed of de-constructed quilt pieces. It is a metaphor for all those things we think we have left behind. Just when we think we are on the straightaway, things that are unresolved leap out to trip us or to let us know that there are still things we have yet to work out and assimilate. This piece came about after I visited the home I grew up in--a place I had not seen in many years! I found things from my own past that I still needed to confront and work through.

Ever since I left the Midwest, I have lived somewhere in proximity to mountains. This is inspired by the joy with which children create and draw mountains when they are first exposed to them. The mountains are created from quilt pieces and this title is a reminder of the magic of either the sunrise or sunset, depending on where you are in relation to the mountains at the time.
